What We Believe

This Statement of Basic Beliefs represents the most simple and foundational beliefs of Christian orthodoxy from a biblical and historical perspective. It captures the basic contours of Christian theology. Anyone pursuing education for their child(ren) at Greenwood Christian Academy must agree with this statement.

Statement of Doctrinal Beliefs

1. THE BIBLE
All the Scriptures are true, without error, authoritative, and sufficient for salvation, faith, and life. (Psalm 19:7–11; 2 Timothy 3:14–17; 1 Peter 1:23–2:2; 2 Peter 1:20–21)

2. GOD
There is only one true God, Creator of heaven and earth, who eternally exists in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 45:5–6, 46:9–10; John 17:3; 1 Corinthians 8:4–6; 1 Timothy 2:5; Genesis 1:26; Psalm 45:6–7, 110:1; Matthew 3:13–17, 28:17–20; 1 Corinthians 12:4–6)

3. JESUS CHRIST
Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, died on a cross, and rose from the dead. He is both fully God and fully human. (Matthew 1:20; Luke 2:52; John 1:1–4, 14, 8:58; Colossians 1:15–20; Hebrews 1:1–3)

4. HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. The Holy Spirit unites believers to Jesus Christ in faith, brings about the new birth, and dwells within the regenerate. He assures us of the truth of God’s promises and leads the Church into a right understanding and rich application of the truth of God’s Word. (Genesis 1:2; Psalm 104:30; John 16:7–11; 1 Corinthians 12:13; John 1:12–13, 3:3–8; Romans 8:11–17; 1 Corinthians 2:12–14; John 17:17–19)

5. HUMANITY
Man (male and female) was created in the image of God; man sinned and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God. All human beings are born with a sinful nature. (Genesis 1:26, 2:16–17; James 1:8–9; Romans 5:12, 14–17, 3:23; Isaiah 59:1–2)

6. SIN
All humanity, Christ excluded, is sinful by both birth and action. (Genesis 6:5; Psalm 51:5; Proverbs 22:15; Jeremiah 17:9; Romans 3:9–20, 23; 5:8, 12–21; 7:18; Ephesians 2:1–3) The deserved penalty for sin is physical and spiritual death. (Genesis 2:15–17; Genesis 3:19; Romans 5:12; 6:23; James 1:14–15)

7. SALVATION
We believe that we are saved not by our works but by grace through faith in Christ alone. Jesus Christ died as the sacrificial substitute to pay the penalty for sin. (John 1:29; 10:1–18; Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 15:1–4; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 1:4; 1 Peter 3:18)

8. ETERNITY
Jesus Christ physically rose from the dead, ascended into Heaven, and will one day physically return. (Matthew 28:1–20; Mark 16:1–8; Luke 24:1–53; John 20–21; 1 Corinthians 15:12–34; John 14:3; Acts 1:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:16; Hebrews 9:28; 1 John 3:2; Revelation 1:7)

9. THE CHURCH
Jesus Christ is the head of the Church, and those who are saved are the members of His body. The Church exists to glorify God, and its members are to live for Christ and not themselves. We believe in the spiritual unity of the body in its common love for Christ as each member walks and grows in the Spirit, telling the world what the Lord has done. (Romans 12:5; Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 10:17, 12:12–13, 27; Ephesians 4:12, 5:23; Galatians 4:12, 5:23, 3:26–28; Acts 2:42; Matthew 28:18–20; Acts 1:8)

10. CREATION
God created the heavens and the earth out of nothing but His spoken word and for His own glory. (Genesis 1–2, 6–9; Exodus 20:11; Colossians 1:16)

11. MARRIAGE
Marriage is defined by God as the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive, covenant union for a lifetime, and is the basic unit of a healthy society. (Genesis 2:18–25; Matthew 19:4–6; 1 Corinthians 7:2–4, 10–11; Ephesians 5:21–33; Hebrews 13:4; Exodus 20:14; 1 Thessalonians 4:3–8)

12. GENDER
God made man (male and female) in His own image as the crown of creation so that man might glorify Him through enjoying fellowship with Him. We believe that God wonderfully creates every individual as either male or female. These two distinct genders together reflect the image and nature of God. God designed sexual intimacy exclusively for the marriage relationship; all sexual activity outside of marriage is sinful and dishonors God. (Genesis 1:26–27; Mark 10:6) Rejection of one’s biological gender is not in line with God’s created order and intentional design. (Romans 1:18–32; 1 Corinthians 6:9–20)
